Why the Ban was Introduced
In recent weeks, we have received customer enquiries relating to โnon-foldable E-bikes bannedโ and โUK E-bike laws 2025โ.
So allow us to fill you in on whatโs been going on. The main change is that there has been a non-folding electric bike ban which is now in place on the London Underground and other Transport for London services.ย
Unfortunately, not all E-bikes in the UK are purchased from trusted stockists such as ourselves. This can mean that cheap or inferior parts are used to build the bike, which can pose safety issues. There have been several instances of E-bike fires on the London Underground, which forced TfL to act to protect the safety of customers.ย
On March 31, TfL officially banned all non-folding E-bikes as a precaution.
However, there are a small number of services which are exempt from the ban. These have been posted on the TfL website.ย
What This Means For Riders
The recent ban on bringing a non-folding E-bike on TfL services has made it pretty clear that if your electric bike doesnโt fold, you canโt bring it on the London Underground or any other TfL service, unless you happen to travel during the very select times when TfL lifts the ban.ย
However, if you own an E-bike which does fold, and you wish to take it on Londonโs transport network, you will be unaffected by the change.ย
If you are impacted by the ban and you live, work in or visit London with your E-bike, now is a good time to consider switching to a folding electric bike model. Otherwise, youโll need to make alternative arrangements for your journey involving taking a non-foldable E-bike on TfL services.ย
Specifically, your electric bike will need to offer an extended range capability so that it can cover the distance you previously travelled via TfL services. You will also need to ensure the E-bike is road legal.
Alternatives And Solutions
The easiest way to avoid any problems when riding in or around London is to switch to a foldable E-bike model.ย But who says you have to miss out on speed, distance range or even rider comfort if you switch to an E-bike which can fold down?ย
