Electric bikes provide the familiar function, not to mention comfort of a regular pedal cycle. However, they upgrade your riding experience due to having a motor, battery and controls built into the bike. This allows you to use a function called pedal assist to gain more speed, or simply make riding up hills less taxing. 

When you start pedalling on an electric bike, the controls detect this and will activate the motor to give you a boost. The level of boost is fully adjustable, depending on whether you want to get in some cardio in by doing most of the work yourself, or want the bike to assist as much as possible throughout your ride. 

Similar to other items you own that are powered by electricity, you’ll need to charge your E-bike at regular intervals to keep the battery topped up. 

As you’ll notice on our website, various types of E-bikes exist. The different features to look out for include the motor type, distance range, foldable options, road legal status and rear rack storage. 

We recommend having a good browse through our electric bike models to choose the features which will best suit how you plan on using your E-bike.

If your E-bike meets the EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) regulations, then no licence is required to ride it.

However, electric bikes equipped with a ‘twist and go’ throttle are only covered under EAPC regulations if the throttle is limited to 6km/h (3.7mph).

Yes, electric bikes are road legal in the UK so long as they meet EAPC (electrically assisted pedal cycles) criteria. 

EAPC requires the electric bike to have a motor which only works when you are pedalling. The motor assist must cut off at 15.5 MPH. Also, the power limit of the motor must not exceed 250 watts.

You must also be 14 years or older to ride an electric bike legally.
