Model-dependent, most E-scooters can travel between 10-25 miles on average before they require charging again.ย

Ensuring your electric scooter has enough charge is important. Not only could a low charge cut your ride short, but poor charging habits could also shorten the lifespan of the battery itself.ย

How To Charge An Electric Scooter

It might seem like a basic topic. But the reality is that nobody teaches you how to charge electric scooters correctly. So, similar to learning how to become a confident E-scooter rider, it can also take time to learn how to look after your E-scooter battery.ย

Weโ€™ve broken everything you need to know down into simple steps so that you can learn from scratch, or boost your existing knowledge.ย

Battery Charging Basics

Plug into the E-scooter first, then the wall: To avoid an electrical surge which can damage the battery, you should always connect your charger to the scooter first and then plug it into the wall.ย

Electric scooters need charging regularly: Full discharges are bad for E-scooter batteries. Keeping the battery at between 20% and 80% charged is important to prevent lithium-ion batteries from degrading faster. So when youโ€™re zipping around on your electric scooter, make sure you plan ahead to charge the battery as required.ย

Be mindful of extension leads: If you will be using an extension lead to charge an E-scooter, you should keep a close watch to ensure it doesnโ€™t overload. Ensure the lead is uncoiled and is also suitable for the power you will be plugging into it.

Only use the correct type of plug: Around the world, different plugs exist which also have varying voltages. For instance, the UK (240V) uses different plugs from America (120V). It can cause safety issues or damage the battery if you try to convert the voltage using an adaptor. So, if youโ€™ll be riding an E-scooter in the UK, make sure it has a UK plug!ย

Tips To Extend Battery Life

If you are mindful of the battery life, especially if youโ€™ve read your E-scooter manual carefully, then this can go a long way in promoting the health of the battery. After all, every electric scooter works a little differently, making it important to understand any unique quirks of your scooter make and model.ย

Or, if you purchase your E-scooter from our London store, we can also offer you some expert advice about maintaining the battery health.ย

When you are riding your E-scooter, you can also help extend the battery life by riding smoothly and avoiding sudden stops or starts. Likewise, you should avoid stressing your electric scooter and its battery by carrying more weight than is recommended. Riding on bumpy or uneven terrain can also make the motor work harder, which can in turn deplete the battery quicker.ย

Plan on taking a break from riding for a while? We recommend storing your E-scooter at a 50% charge if it wonโ€™t be used for a few weeks. Also, donโ€™t allow your electric scooter to go for more than 1-2 months without a full recharge to maintain the health of the battery.ย

P.S. Are you doing everything right to look after the battery, but find the distance range isnโ€™t enough for your needs? It could be time to upgrade your E-scooter to a more powerful model.ย

Charging E-Scooter UK – 5 Common Mistakes To Avoid

#1 – Using a third-party charger or battery

If you lose your old charger, it might be tempting to order a cheap replacement online. However, unless the charger and battery are genuine parts, this can create the risk of electrical fires. By sticking with genuine parts, including the replacement E-scooter batteries we sell on our website, you can keep safe while also ensuring the battery will work as intended.ย

#2 – Overcharging your E-scooter

Charging an electric scooter is not like charging a toothbrush – you canโ€™t just plug it in and come back to it hours later! Simply put, itโ€™s not a good idea to leave your electric scooter charging for longer than the specified time. How long an E-scooter takes to charge can vary depending on the model, but it can be as quick as 4 hours. Ultimately, overcharging will shorten the battery life meaning youโ€™ll require a replacement much sooner.ย

#3 – Charging an electric scooter in extreme temperatures

In recent years, the UK has experienced some extreme temperatures, both on the hot and cold side of things. What you might not know is that extreme heat or cold can degrade the battery while itโ€™s charging. So, try and ensure the location where you charge your electric scooter does not experience extreme temperature fluctuations.ย ย

#4 – Skipping firmware updates

We know, your phone and laptop are always getting you to install updates. Now your electric scooter needs them too? Well, yes, because updates help improve lots of things, including your battery health! By never skipping the required updates, you can receive all firmware updates relating to charging and battery management.

#5 – Riding on emptyย

As weโ€™ve hinted at above, itโ€™s not a good idea to keep riding your electric scooter to the point where you completely drain the battery. Thatโ€™s because this can put a strain on the battery, especially if itโ€™s done too often. Instead, we recommend topping up the charge when it starts to fall below 30%.ย
