What about angle-grinder-resistant locks?
Power-tool attacks are the method most commonly used against high-value bikes in urban areas. Standard hardened steel, however tough against bolt croppers and hand saws, can be cut by an angle grinder in a fraction of the time it takes against hand tools.
A newer generation of D-locks uses specialist composite materials engineered to resist motorised cutting. According to Hiplok, the 1000 Series locks use a material that “grinds down angle grinder discs, rendering the tool useless.” These are manufacturer claims – we haven’t independently tested them – but both the Hiplok DX1000 and the smaller Hiplok DXF hold independent Sold Secure certification that reflects their tested performance.

Sold Secure is the UK’s independent security testing body. Locks are tested against specific tools and attack methods, with each grade reflecting a different threat level:
- Bronze: Resists opportunist thieves using basic hand tools. Suited to low-risk environments and short stops.
- Silver: Greater resistance against a more determined attacker. Enhanced tool list.
- Gold: High resistance against a dedicated thief using heavy-duty tools. Recommended for high-value bikes and city parking.
- Diamond: The highest grade – tested against the most extensive tool list, including some power tools and machine-based testing.
There’s an important category distinction for e-bike riders. Sold Secure lists locks under Pedal Cycle or Powered Cycle ratings. According to Sold Secure, if you own an e-bike, they recommend using a Powered Cycle-rated product. Pedal Cycle Diamond is equivalent in test standard to Powered Cycle Gold, so a lock that holds both ratings (like the Oxford Magnum or Oxford HardcoreXC13) covers both categories.
Your insurer may specify a minimum Sold Secure grade and category in your policy documents. Check the exact wording before buying rather than assuming a grade is sufficient.
